Dave Lewis
West 1988
Hero of Smithtown
A generation ago, the image of a police officer was one that was known in the neighborhood where he was assigned, watching over the youth and steering them away from potential harm. That image is reflected in NYPD Officer David A. Lewis as he works with youth in the city as well as his home community.
David, 32, is a Police Officer assigned to the Brooklyn North Task Force. Having been an officer for six years, Mr. Lewis has been awarded many commendations in his career. He was the recipient of the Commendation Medal from the NYPD in 2000.
In addition to his career in the NYPD, David is also actively involved in his community. A member of the Smithtown Volunteer Fire Department for the past decade, David is an Emergency Medical Technician also trained in Scuba Rescue. In addition to his firefighting duties, David also works as a Fire Prevention instructor with the community as well as an advisor/instructor with the Junior Fire Department. In his tenure with the Smithtown Fire Department, he has also received commendations including a Level 3 Medal (1999), as well as being nominated for the NYS EMT Provider of the Year (1999) and Suffolk Life’s Volunteer of the Year (1999). He was named the First Responders Award from the Smithtown Fire Department in 1999.
Volunteering more time to his community, David is also a Suffolk County PAL Martial Arts instructor which highlights his 3rd degree Black Belt karate ability. His karate ability has also been recognized by being twice winning the NYS Welter Weight Champion in full contact karate and being named New York State’s Toughest Cop Alive (2001). He also donates time to the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, where he assists the students in their practice and works with the dogs in learning their commands.
Working with the youth in his community, David is involved with not only the Junior Fire Department’s program, but also with the NYPD mentoring program. David has been mentoring a youth in Brooklyn on a regular basis for the past few years.
David is also employed part time as a Security Official with the Smithtown School District.
Prior to his employment with the NYPD, David was trained at the Culinary Institute of America and is a certified chef. Prior to entering the NYPD, David worked as a chef at John Peel. He has been awarded many accolades for his cooking ability.
Married to Tanya for six years, David is the father of two daughters Delia and Ashley. The family resides in Smithtown.
